..docx does not open in ABIWord or Open Office. Then, again, it doesn't
open in Word 2000 either.

Fuçking assholes, trying to monopolize the word processor market.

Opening the 2007 Office release files in earlier versions of Office You
can open and edit a 2007 Office release file in an earlier version of Word,
Excel, or PowerPoint by downloading the necessary file converters. On the
computer with an earlier version of Office, go to the Download Center and
download the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for 2007 Office Word, Excel
and PowerPoint File Formats.

Important For the converters to work, your version of Microsoft Office
must first be updated to one of the service packs listed here. After you
have installed the service pack for your version of Office, then download
the converter.

a.. Microsoft Office 2000 Service Pack 3
b.. Microsoft Office XP Service Pack 3
c.. Microsoft Office 2003 Service Pack 1

I found it by trying to open a .docx file with Word 2000 and it directed
me to the download page. Now, if I can just find an add on for ABIWord ...

Microsoft realizes that its closed proprietary document format is history.
The world's governments are not going to tolerate that bullshit any longer.
Hence, Microsoft has been making an effort to get Open XML format as the
new standard. Microsoft's Open XML just went before the IOS and ooXML was
shot down as being a recognized standard. :-)

See ...

Microsoft sure did lobby and used some pretty reprehensible strong-arm
tactics to try and sway the vote. Thankfully, the majority on the voting
body rejected Microsoft's bid.

Cheers.

What on earth are you using Windows for? Shouldn't you be peddling Ubuntu
to the masses?

Remember - Open Sores software is where it's at

Erm, that' quite ironic, as it is a free to use open non-binary standard.
There are no convertors yet, only because it is new.
