I Like To Permanently Avoid Seeing A Particular Critical Update

When I run Windows Update, a persistent critical update (KB891711)
keeps appearing.
I would like to remove it from any future update queries since I could
never successfully get it to work (this update seems to be a sore spot
for other folks as well).

If anyone has a solution to either removing it or getting the actual
update to work on Windows 98, I'd appreciate it (please, no advice to
migrate to XP).

I attach a post from PA Bear which should help. I have followed his advice
and it works for me and other downloads as well. Just substitute the update
you want to load. (Instead of his item 1) and link, you will need to go to
the Windows Update catalogue to find the update. Once located, add it to
your download folder, download it and save it to a unique folder. Then go to
his item 2 and follow the rest.):-

-----------------------------------
Clear History, delete Cookies and delete Temporary Internet Files (including
offline files) via IE: Tools > Options > General, then...

1. Download the Cumulative Security Update for Outlook Express 6 Service
Pack 1 (KB837009; all OSS) from the following link, saving it to your
Desktop:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

[ Optional: 2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode. (During the reboot, keep
pressing the F8 key until the Windows Startup menu appears > Choose Safe
Mode > Enter.)

3. Rename the downloaded file to KB837009.EXE and copy it to C:\ (the root
directory of drive C; assumes drive C is the boot drive)

4. Start > Run > (type in) C:\KB837009.EXE /N:V (Note the spaces) > press
ENTER

5. Close the command window.

6. Reboot [into Windows] and check in at Windows Update to see if the
problem persists.

On the Windows Update site, you can click on the [+] next to the item
description and then check the "don't show me this update again" box, and
Windows update/Automatic Updates won't keep offering it to you.

John -
What you advised doesn't work that way (for me at least). There's no
[+] next to any of the particular updates.

What I did do is rerun the new update for this critical update
(KB891711), which if I recall was dated in April after MS fixed a known
problem with the previous one.

Systems is still stable after new, revised update.
....thanks!
