Lines across Display when playing AVI

When I play AVI files in Windows Media Player, the display has a lot of
horizontal lines, distorting the picture. When I play the same file in VLC,
it works fine. I'm running Windows XP SP2 with WMP 11

It's a Lenovo Laptop. I've got the latest drivers, but still have the
problem. Wondering if it's a codec thing, as VLC plays ok
