my friend's email is thru gmail. she has a links button (looks like chain
links) that she uses to provide links to websites *without* showing the
website address. it simply highlights a word she has typed and the mail
recipient clicks on that word to go to the website. i think several words (a
phrase) can be highlighted as well as just one word. so she might say,
'click here for more info' and the word *here* will be highlighted and
contains the link. does windows vista mail have this feature? i cannot find
it.

thanks!

You can use your favorite word processor to insert a hyperlink, Name it
anything you like and copy and paste the link into an email message.

In Windows Mail, open up a new message, select a piece of text and choose
Hyperlink from the Insert menu.

This will only work if the email is HTML formatted, you can check/choose
this option from the Format menu.

another question ~ how can i do the same thing but in a newsgroup instead of
an email? there is no 'insert' pull-down menu with a hyperlink button when
i'm in yahoogroups.

thanks,
michelle

It is not considered good conduct to post in HTML on Usenet. Please, use
text format. If you want to shorten hyperlinks in your postings, consider
using a web service like TinyURL. I do not think it is necessary though,
Usenet people are fairly blasé about long urls.

forgive me, but i'm tech-challenged and do not understand your reply. did i
do a faux pas on *this* board? i don't know what usenet is, or the
difference between posting in html and text format. basically, what i want
to do it the same thing my friend does from her gmail account, which
automatically comes with a links button. she frequently uses highlighted one
word links for longer addresses in one of the groups we're both in.

i need baby steps, my friend. thanks for the hand-holding!

Nope. :-)

Usenet is an Internet distributed discussion network, where people post
articles in newsgroups. Although you are reading/posting this on the
Microsoft Communities web interface, what actually lies under is a newsgroup
called microsoft.public.windows.vista.general - not a web forum or board.

A newsreader is a better way of accessing the Usenet than clunky interfaces
like Microsoft's or Google Groups. Here is how to use Windows Mail for your
newsreader:

http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Win...916d41033.mspx

HTML is the markup language in which web pages are written, so that browsers
can understand how to display them on a screen. Email clients can also use
this language to format contents, but in newsgroups plain text is the
customary way of doing business.

Posting through the Microsoft Communities interface is done in plain text
only, there is no Insert link option. Like I mentioned in my previous post,
there are other means of shortening long url's, but it really is not
necessary to do it.
