Live ID Questions

I apologize in advance if this is the incorrect newsgroup but when you see
my question, you will understand why I can't post to the Microsoft web-based
community forums.

Currently, I use Windows Live Mail exclusively on my desktop to receive and
send all my email through my ISP. I also don't "message". Consequently, I
have never initiated a Live ID. I don't want "hot mail", calendar or contact
information on the web. I now find that it appears that I need a Live ID in
order to post questions on various Microsoft Community forums, which are all
web-based.

QUESTIONS:

1. I assume that I need to set up a Live ID in order to post to the
Microsoft Community forums. Correct?
2. If I do need a Live ID, do I HAVE TO set up a "hotmail" account?
3. If I have to have a hot mail account, is there a way to "restrict" it
so that it can't be used to either send/or receive email or do anything
related to contacts and calendars?

Assuming the that the answer to 3. is that it can be restricted, can someone
either send "specific" instructions on how to accomplish the objective or
point me to a web page of instructions to accomplish it.

--
Thank You,
Richard

1. Yes

2.
https://signup.live.com/signup.aspx?...ollrs=12&lic=1
Use your email address to create a Live ID. You will not have 'hotmail'
account, but you have the option of using Calendar and Contacts.

3. Using your address will create a Live ID, not a Hotmail account.
Do not sign in when in WLMail. When not signed in, it says Sign in under
the close X.

Ron,

Geez, thanks for the fast response. I have established my ID and have been
able to post my question in the appropriate community forum. Everything went
as you advertised and per my desires.

I wish corporate technical support groups were as helpful as newsgroups.
"Technical Support" is an oxymoron regardless of which language it's
delivered in. You gave me my answer in 33 minutes. Normally, you can't even
connect via chat or telephone with a technician in that time.

That depends on how you define Microsoft Community forums. Most,
(if not all) of those forums are merely an alternate, web-based interface
to what is known as the old Microsoft newsgroups, accessible via any
NNTP reader, such as Windows Live Mail. No Live ID is required to
access those forums via your newsgroups reader.

To setup the Microsoft community forums in WLM (this newsgroup is on those community forums)
WLM Menu/Tools/Accounts/Add/News Group account/Next
The server is msnews.microsoft.com
Enter a display name, and an email address(e.g. a false email address is suggested to avoid harvesting of valid email
addresss(e.g. d)
Enter the above server and follow the remaining instructions to download the newsgroup list.
Once complete, subscribe only to the groups of interest.

Gary and Winston

Thanks for your responses.

My original question was submitted via Windows Live Mail, Microsoft
Communities. The reason I wanted, and have now established, a Live ID is
because it is my understanding that NEW communities are all web-based, not
NNTP newsgroups. Specifically, I was interested in the Windows 7 and
Microsoft Security Essentials communities. Now that I have a Live ID, I can
access them. Neither of these two sites show on the list "Newsgroup
Subscriptions" list in Windows Live Mail.

Anyway, no big deal, I just wanted to share the rationale behind my original
post. I now seem to have access, one way or another, to everything of
current interest to me.

You have a valid point. Microsoft is gradually backing away from
supporting NNTP newsgroups.

Richard,
You're welcome.

Yes...Msft has increased the proliferation of online forums.
- Online forums are those like the Windows 7 and Microsoft Security Essentials.

This newsgroup is available in Nntp format and also web format. The latter(web format, http)are the 'Communities' and different
interface than the online forums.

The online forums are accessible via http(IE or other browser) like the communities do not appear in the list of newsgroups(unlike
the communities) available from the msnews server for nttp clients(e.g. WLM).
