Just spent the day setting up a new Windows 7 Desktop PC for a friend and I
noticed something different between his installation of Live mail and my own
which I hope someone can explain.

Unlike mine, which is also on windows 7 desktop but 32 bit and not 64 bit
like my friends, he has a ribbon bar with icons and tabbed pages not unlike
that used in Office 2007 and 2010 but all mail orientated, A very "busy"
setup, Mine is just standard words e.g. New, Reply Sync etc and not "busyŁ
at all just very simplistic.

Can anyone explain why the difference and whether I can replicate his or for
that matter he can replicate mine - Mine is simpler and he would find that
easier

----------
You have the 2009 Version, he has the 2011.
Simple easy to use control is not available in V 2011.

windows update as an option (or otherwise) ??

Hi, Barrowhill.

Not likely that WLM updates will ever be available on WINDOWS Update because
the Windows Live Essentials are not a part of Windows itself. They are
applications that can be downloaded (for free) and installed by the user.
They are added by many OEMs, but they are not a part of Windows.

WLE updates MAY someday be available via MICROSOFT Updates. The subtle
difference in names between WU and MU is significant. WU updates only
Windows itself; MU updates Windows plus many other Microsoft products, such
as Office and maybe - in the future - WLE.

To convert your WU to MU, go to Control Panel\Windows Updates and click
Change settings from the menu on the left. On the next screen, check the
box under Microsoft Updates that says, "Give me updates for Microsoft
products and check for new optional Microsoft software when I update
Windows".

To add to RC's explanation
1. Windows Live Essentials (WLE) program updates may appear in Windows
Update (on Win7 and Vista) if Microsoft Update is enabled
- Win7 Orb(Start Menu) > Windows Update > Change Settings > 'Check
Microsoft Update'

2. If you install WLE2009 on Vista or Win7 then WLE 2011 may appear as an
optional update
3. If you install WLE 2011 Gold[intial release] or QFE1 on Vista or Win7
then the WLE program (e.g. WLMail, WLMsgr may prompt you to upgrade - this
is called a current version request (CVR) - it is not being pushed via
Microsoft Update but the program itself - agreeing will update all WLE
applications to QFE2)

Note: In the past, Windows Live has deprecated earlier versions - upgrade
mandatory rather than optional to retain functionality.
- WLE 2009 apps will no longer be updated as a 2009 version, the last was
released in May 2010
- WLE 2009 apps are supported for the foreseeable future (due to it being
the last version that runs on XP, but capable of running on Vista/Win7.
Foreseeable future, does not mean in perpetuity, nor does it necessarily
mean until the end of XP's lifecycle, nor does it mean it will function in
perpetuity on Vista or Win7. ---> if using 2009, have a plan for the future
<g>!
- WLE 2011 apps are currently released at the QFE2 level --- QFE2 is the
current available version for download, and also being pushed as a 'CVR'
(not Microsoft Update) for those using WLE 2011 Gold or QFE1 on Vista/Win7.
As noted above, earlier versions can be deprecated thus an optional upgrade
may become mandatory (i.e. QFE2 may become mandatory)

RC,

Many thanks for your response. I should have made it clear in my reference
to Windows Updates. I should have stated "Microsoft Updates" as both my XP
and Windows 7 machines are set up for updating all installed Microsoft
products.

As WLM 2011 is only for Windows 7 (and Vista) I was hoping when the
(Microsoft) Updates process ran it on the Win 7 PC, it would indicate a
update for WLM. Obviously not included as yet.

Winston,

Thanks for a comprehensive response. See also reply to RC - no prompts to
upgrade any WLE apps. Downloaded WLE 2011 and installed. Now seeing
"ribbon" toolbar in WLM. Once again thanks

used to post, the other Windows 7 and WLM just upgraded to v2011.
Question............How do you know which machine I used to post with??

Hi, Barrowhill.

An old trick, going back well into OE:

Highlight the message in the Message List, then press <Ctrl>+<F3>. (A
longer route to get to the same place: Right-click on the Message in the
Message List, then Properties | Details | Message Source.)

Either way will get the Message Source screen for that message onscreen.
There is a LOT of information here, but the line that we are looking for now
in your latest post is:
X-Newsreader: Microsoft Windows Live Mail 14.0.8117.416

This tells us that you used WLM 14 (aka WLM 2009), which means you used the
machine with WLM 2009 installed for that post - and for all your posts in
this thread, apparently. Use <Ctrl>+<F3> on one of my posts and you will
see:
X-Newsreader: Microsoft Windows Live Mail 15.4.3538.513

Because I'm using WLM 15 (aka WLM 2011). The post from mac (Steve) says:
X-Newsreader: Microsoft Windows Mail 6.0.6002.18197

So he was using WM, not WLM.

RC,

Neat! Many thanks for tip.

noting your comment re mac (Steve), is there a reason Microsoft offer
Windows Mail and Live Mail. Is one (perceived) better than the other?? or
are three the same product just packaged different.
