Live Messanger won't allow change in display name

Just installed Live Messanger and it won't allow me to change my display
name. After I change it and hit apply it still remains my email address.

When I run Windows Messanger a warning comes up saying that my display name
can't be my email address or blank. When I type in the name and click ok it
seems to save it however if I sign out and sing back in, I get the same
warning.

I have tried uninstalling both Windows Messanger and Live Messanger.

I'm experiencing the exactly same problem.
I've tried clean install and clean boot, neither works!

Worse still, after replying the fourth time (without offering any effective
help), the Support Team became silent!

What am I going to do???

Are you using any Plugins?
Did you download WLM from the official website? (http://get.live.com)
Do you have a bit of lag, and so your name may not be changing to the
servers?
When you installed WLM, did you do a full uninstall of MSN first? or just
install over it? If so try to remove WLM totally...

Guys, just verify your email address, and reboot windows live messenger.

my display picture and in all of my chatting windows my signature is "Q

You can sign up a new ID and have a test.

Had the same issue... here is how I fixed it on XP..
Exited out of live messenger.. loaded WINDOWS messenger from the program
list and signed in ... prompted me saying something about not having a name
.... I typed in what I wanted.. ran fine... then signed out of windows
messenger, exited the app and started LIVE messenger... signed in.. error
about an "invalid name" clicked ok and the name was showing properly... I
could then go into the options of live and change the name like you are
supposed to be able to.
