Live Messenger 2009 suddenly hanging on sign in

Hi

I run WLM Version 2009 Build 14.0.8064.206 on an HP laptop under Vist
Home Premium 32 bit. It's been running fine up until about an hour ag
when I rebooted my system

Now when I try to log in, WLM hangs on the Signing In screen and th
buddies spin forever ... I don't get any kind of error message. *I ca
log in fine to the same account on another PC and on webmessenger*, so
guess it's something specific to this laptop rather than the account.

I went to 'Choose your version of Windows Live Messenger or MS
Messenger
(http://help.live.com/help.aspx?proje...m&market=en-us
and have deleted my contacts cache as explained there and als
reregistered Msxml3.dll. I still have exactly the same problem

I see there is a registry fix posted her

but the post is dated 2008 and I'm not sure if it's still valid
