In Windows Live Messenger 8.5 I enter my E-mail address, Password, and then I
check the boxes next to Remember me, Remember my Password, and Sign me in
automatically. Next, I click Sign in and it signs me in, but this
information is not remembered if I restart my computer. How do I fix this,
so it will remember my sign in information if I restart my computer. I tried
the uninstall reinstall solution, but it did't fix the problem.

I know about how to check those boxes, that isn't the problem. The problem
is when my computer reboots, it starts Live Messenger, but it didn't remember
my sign in information even though I checked all the boxes so it would. But
thanks anyway.

Greetings Greg,

If you go into Options, choose the Security category instead, is "This is a shared computer
so don't store my address book, display picture, or personal message on it" selected? If so,
this will give you the behavior you're seeing. Just uncheck it and you should be good to go.

Thanks for trying to help. That solution didn't work because that box was
not selected when I went to check to see if it was. So I still have the same
problem.

I have had this problem for at least 2 years. I have three computers with XP
Pro SP2 on then and only one has this problem. It is the older copy of XP
that has the problem. My daughter has the same problem with Messenger
signing in on her copy of XP that was purchesed about the same time. I have
talked and conversed by email with Messenger techs a number of times, and
thay don't have a clue. Here is what I think the problem is. The time clock
taskbar has problems. For some reason there is a glitch in this taskbar
area. Microsoft knows about it, but never did a hotfix to correct it. I
have tried everything I know without any sucess. I am afraid if you have the
problem just be ready to re-sign in about 90 % of the time. You can check
all the boxes and have all the settings correct and it will not hold your
email address, password, and the three check you place in the boxes. Oh by
the way, the auto fill will not help the process of retyping the entry. If
anyone know of a fix post it here. I have about 100 sheets of fixes I have
seen over thelast 2 year and non work.

Thanks for the information Bern. It sure would be nice if this was fixed!
Maybe it will be fixed when they come out with Windows Live Messenger 9.0,
but sounds like it is a problem with my Windows XP version. What doesn't
make sense is that my version hasn't changed, and it was working before, so
what has changed to make it stop working? My guess is there is something
wrong with the Sign-in Assistant. I might try and uninstall this and see
what happens. If it works, I will report back.

I was able to solve this issue on a customer's computer that was running
XP. It's reasonable to assume the same fix will apply to Vista
versions. The problem indeed appears to be in the registry in the HKU.
This part of the registry is different for each Windows profile (the
name you log in with). Therefore, create a new profile (control panel
--> User Accounts) and then test it out in this profile. If all is
good, you can copy over things like desktop, favorites, Documents and
Email from the old profile in C:\Documents and settings (XP) or C:\Users
(Vista) to get your data to this new profile. Once you are satisfied
you have everything simply delete the old account.

Good luck, Mark
