Live Messenger Games Problem

A friend is using XP and until recently regularly played the MSN games (
Minesweeper etc) . Last week it stopped working with the message Waiting on
your buddy" hanging for ever ! ! What could be the cause of this? Live
messenger has been updated to the most recent version on both computers,
cahes cleared etc etc Any ideas ?
