Live messenger - impossible to access - please help

Hi all, I've registered here in a last ditch attempt for help on how to
access my MSN Messnger. (I'm using vista home premium 32 bit).

I've never had any problems at all untill I was forced to upgrade to
the latest version. Now I can't even log in.

Here's the problem...

Every time I've signed in to messenger 8.5 for the last year or so,
it's asked me if I want to upgrade. I've always said no, as the version
I have has always worked fine. But now a pop up box states that I have
to upgrade or I wont be permitted to sign in.

So, ok I upgrade. The download appears to complete, then rolls back and
fails, every time.

The error code is Ox80070643 and the message is "Installer has
insuficient privileges to modify this file... looks like another program
is preventing the installer from working".

I've tried with my firewall turned off, cleared cache etc, but nothing
works.

I've browsed the threads on this site and it seems to be a common
problem. I've tried all the suggestions that I've read, including the
very helpful suggestions and links from Jonathan Kay.

I've posted this here as it seems to be busier than the other forum I
posted in (windows live - are there 2 forums?).

Any suggestions very much appreciated.

Greetings Trev,

This will be some sort of permissions problem. Most likely, it'll be easy to fix, but we'll
need to know what exactly it can't write to.

Assuming it's not telling you, you can open up the log in notepad by pressing the Windows key
and R to bring up the Run box, paste in:
%allusersprofile%\microsoft\wlsetup\logs
and click OK. Then just double-click the most recent log to open it.

Most likely the problem file and message will be near the end of the log.

Are you still about Jonathan? I tried Dan's suggestions above (thank
Dan) but Windows Live Essentials won't delete from my programs list, an
when I download version 8.5 form your link it won't install (same erro
- insuficient privileges to modify this file)

It's slowly driving me mad! I use a Packard Bell PC which has a
annoyingly loud hard drive, which ticks like crazy for half an hou
after each attempted install or deletion. I guess it's sendin
information to Microsoft

If you're still around, any ideas how I can install version 8.5 please
