Live Messenger refuses to start

I have this problem –

(and apparently not just me:
http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/Sho...47361&SiteID=1)

When I start Live Messenger 8.1 its main window never opens. Task Manager
displays “msnmsgr.exe” process but nothing else happens. I try again and
again but the only outcome this produces is that Task Manager displays more
“msnmsgr.exe” processes. (My record is 23 “msnmsgr.exe” processes)

I went through “Add/Remove Programs” and registry cleaning up everything
suspicious, but to no avail.

The worth part of it is that having failed to launch version 8.1 I then
installed 8.5 beta with the same oddity.

Looks like some newbie wrote this messenger with VB6 placing “ON ERROR
RESUME NEXT” in every function.

Any help will be highly appreciated.

Greetings Eugene,

Do you happen to be using a router? If so, Messenger is probably waiting for a broadcast
message from your router and the router is waiting for a message from Messenger.

Good old deadlock.

Assuming this is the case, reset the router (aka unplug and plug back in) and if that doesn't
resolve it, try seeing if there's a firmware update for the router at the router
manufacturers website.

Failing that, as a workaround for the time being, you can use the updated version of MSN
Messenger 7.0.

To do so, download from here:

I had similar issues using a Dlink DI-624 router. The latest firmware update
has a UPnP bug in it that conflicts with Windows Live Messenger. It was
really screwing up the computer, and slowing it to a crawl.

I went in and reflashed the router firmware back to 2.75b6, from the latest
2.76 version.

It now works just fine.

Hope this might be of some help to you, and others.

Thank you all for your help.

I did see a post earlier about a router being responsible.

I, however, have two more computers in my household, both connected to the
same router and running the Messenger with no problem.
