I have recently downloaded windows messenger live. sometimes when I receive
new msgs, emails or alerts, the sound does not play. i used to have the old
msn, and the event sounds always used to play.

any ideas?

Hi Devin,

I've noticed this same problem, too. Sometimes the sound works and
sometimes it doesn't. Signing out/signing in or rebooting my machine
occasionally restores sound effects but not always! As random the problem
occurs, I suspected it was server related.

Sound stuff is all client side and just reacting on the events.

Jennifer/Devin,

What sound card and driver version do you have on your system?

If it helps, you can go to Start->Run, and type "msinfo32".

You should get a System Information dialog.

Expand the tree on the left to: System Summary->Components->Sound Device.

Make sure Sound Device is selected, and goto File->Export. This will write
out the information to a file.

Please reply back with the contents of the file.

Thanks for the info Bin.

Also, I wanted to rule out if your status is set to Busy (either on purpose,
or inadvertantly). The client doesn't play any sounds if your status is
Busy. Note that the client will change your status to Busy if you use some
full-screen app.

Hi Duoc,

That solved the mystery. I did set my status to busy all the time. After I
change it to away, it is working now. Thanks a lot.

David,

Just to make sure, is your status set to "Busy" when you don't hear the
sounds? If so, this is by design. In previous versions of Messenger, there
was a bug where we always played the sound, even if the client was set to
"Busy."

Let me know.

Thanks,

Duoc

no, mines on 'online'. and it somtimes plays the sound. its like a random
thing, it plays it sometimes, and then it doesnt.
i know about the 'busy' thing.
