Live messenger spyware infection?

I just upgraded from messenger 4.7 to the latest messenger release and I
think it's infected with spyware I can't get rid of, or even detect.

I now have these tabs running down the left side and a screen constantly
downloading advertising and video garbage at the bottom, eating up my
bandwidth.

How do I get rid of this?

Those are now features of Windows Live Messenger.

You can turn the tabs off in the options menu but the advertisement at the
bottom remains.

Greetings,

It's not spyware, it's advertising to pay for the service.

You can turn off the tabs by clicking the Tools menu (or press Alt-T if the menu is hidden),
then Options, then Tabs category and choose 'Hide tabs'.

Then go to the General category and uncheck 'Show Video Carousel in the main Windows Live
Messenger window.' under the Video Carousel heading to remove the video selector at the
bottom.

If you search the net, you can find programs to disable these adverts, but
they might contain spyware/malware. Back in the day, you could simply move
to yahoo, but now even their latest IM carry these bandwidth-eating programs.

I would suggest moving to back to IE 4.7 or using yahoo 7.0. Ashame these
programs are turning into "AOL" apps. Of course, free is not free, but I
would think that common sense would dictate that people do not want to view
constant adverts. So much for what consumers want.
