I have deleted all copies of old messenger, trying to install the new verison
of Messenger live. I dowload and run the installer, however it funs through
the process and says can not install. I am connected to the interenet and
everything else seems to be working, however I can't get Live to install.

Hi Derek,

I had the problem once before. I had to do a Factory Reset on my Router
and reset all settings including the proper Date and Time, which fixed my
problem.

So if you have a Router, do a Factory Reset and reset all settings you
were using.

Make sure your Anti-Virus is off. And also check your Services. One of
the Services it needs, might be disabled.

Greetings Derek,

Does it give you any reason? An exact message would be helpful.

Additionally, you may want to try installing directly from the MSI file, which also should
give you more output as to what's wrong:

I'm trying to install windows live messenger on a clean install of windows
XP, and it is refusing to let me. It says "Sorry, you cannot install the
programs you've chosen on this operation system"

Error: os_check: 0x80280004

I can't find anything on this except in french and the translations don't
make sense to me.

Greetings Anderson,

What version of Windows XP is it that you're trying to install on? Messenger is hardcoded to
at least need Windows XP Service Pack 2 (it can however run on the original of Service Pack 1
by installing components in the a certain order). However, the error message should be
different for that.

As a hunch, you could try a manual install instead. To do so, download and run the
MSI file:
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/redir/w3qfe/wlm.asp

If that installs without an error (it'll just install and disappear if it's successful), then
install the Communications Platform:
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/red...e/contacts.asp

Assuming this has worked so far, then you'll need to install two more components, in the same
method as above:
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/redir/w3rc/dw20.asp
and
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/redir/w3rc/msvcrt.asp

If this all works, you should be able to find Messenger on the start menu. If it doesn't
work, you should get at least some error message. If the latter is the case, what the exact
error message you're seeing now?

I've been getting the same error os_check: 0x80280004 and decided to follow
your instructions Jonathan, the third download however comes up with the line
"Microsoft Application Error Reporting" all the others work fine and it seems
Windows Live is there, but when I sign in I get the error: "Windows Live
Communications Platform has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are
sorry for the inconvenience." I'm running Windows XP x64 Edition Version 2003
Service Pack 2.

Thank You.

Jonathan, I had the same problem, and your instructions and downloads were
successful for me. Note that I'm running WS2003, SP2. Thanks for your help.

I have microsoft xp x64 and keep getting the same error os_check: 0x80280004.
Although I tried your links none of them still worked. With xp x64 some
programs cannot be installed like bit defender or diskeeper. I never had any
problems like that with windows 7. If I cannot install this email then what
are other options for installing to get email? BTW, the switch-over was
because this nvidia graphics 8800 gtx card was installed and error in w7 said
"xp x64 is needed" to run properly. installed.
