And now, 10 minutes later OneCare goes GREEN so apparently all ok.

I have a 9yo PC (well the motherboard and most stuff inside is! - obviously
a new-ish video card and over 2gb RAM help, but it's so old it has PCI
slots, not PCI Express, and USB 1 !!! - gotta get THAT fixed!)) and I have
had no trouble with Vista Home Premium at all. Cant believe, really, how
good, stable and quick it is...

If you are running the BETA version of OneCare Live, its probably expired
and thats why you are not getting any updates, if you are in the perpetual
beta, you will continue to get new defintions. Windows Defender deals with
AntiSpyware, which is difference from OneCare which is the AV program.Try
opening the program and click the appropriate link for updating the program
if you are running the final release.

Old is good! I stuck vista Home Premium on a 5yo Packard Bell, CPU 2.0Ghz;
shoved in 128mbs ATI card, and 1 Gig of Ram. Runs like a dream. I have it
networked with a XP computer that has the printer. File sharing, printing,
etc; no worries. I don't know what people on here, at this forum, do with
their NEW computers; must jump on them a few times to turn them on!

Just curious Rod; what is your CPU, and what is your fsb speed. My old
Packard Bell with the CPU 2.0Ghz, that is the only thing holding mine back;
it has a rating of 3.0 for the CPU, whereas overall I would have had have 4.6
with the old Packard Bell setup.
Good to see another Aussie on here. These Yanks should stop treating their
computers like motorbikes; they must be jumping on them, and kick-starting
them to have the probs that they do!

I have a friend that was very happy with Windows Live Onecare and she
had 38 days remaining on the trial. I told her to wait buying it but
she was scared she would forget even so I told her that there was no
chance Microsoft Billy would let her forget. So I helped her buy it
directly from Microsoft and everything went well.

Today she had an urgent phone call for me and when I did not answer
fast enough she ran down the hall and was knocking on my door. (We
live in the same building) The Onecare icon was red and there was
another red shield saying there was a problem. It turns out that
there was an update for the virus definition but for some reason it
would not download. I told her the problem is with Microsoft and that
to just give it some time and the problem may go away all by itself. I
also told her that her system was still fully protected except for the
latest viruses in the new update.

You can't tell her nothing! :-( She does not like little RED icons
and wants instant action. Message to Microsoft Billy - create some
warning icons in a soothing blue and stop scaring the Little Old
Ladies!!!!

a/v update problems are a real pain. First thing to verify is that the date and
time of the PC are set correctly. Then, if it is and the update still won't
happen, it may be worthwhile to reinstall and activate with the LiveID she
originally subscribed with.

Hi Rod, i'm over on the GC; I lived over in Perth in the 70's, great place!
not to mention the Quoka Arms on Rotto!
The system bus speed; the rate that data travels around your motherboard

Mick on Gold coast
