live radio listening

I listen to live radio on my computer sometimes. My question is, does doing
this use up much download space? (would it be better to just listen to a
radio near the computer perhaps).

The only thing that matters is whether or not your notice any performance
degradation that bothers you.

If you mean if it uses up a lot of space on the hard drive, then no. It
streams it and has a small buffer on the hard drive. If you mean actual
amount downloaded through the connection, it depends on the bit rate of your
radio stream. It can add up after a while.

If it's streaming radio it uses no permanent download space.

If instead a file is downloaded, then played, the file size can be
determined my mousing-over the file name, or perhaps right-clicking and
choosing PROPERTIES.

Either way, it's not likely to be a drain on a moderm PC with broadband
access.

It doesn't use download space but several of the streaming radio stations do
slow down your computer. I have found XM radio provides the best reception
and uses the least resources so the computer doesn't noticeably slow down
(loading pages). Also - depending on your audio system, the radio may or may
not sound better if played next to the computer.

Sorry, I don't know what you mean by "download space." If you mean
hard drive space, what is uses is only temporary, and not very much.

Anything you do on a computer uses up something. If you can get the
same results you want with a real radio, you will improve performance
on the computer. But the only significant issue is how much you
improve it, and whether that amount is even noticeable. For most
people, any performance difference is probably so slight that it would
be unnoticeable. But only you can answer the question in your case.

By the way, I sometimes do it too, and I've never noticed any hit in
performance.

I guess it depends on what you listen to. If you're listening to a station
that's available in your area, then it might be simpler just to use your
radio. The Internet, however, gives you the choice of listening to stations
all over the country and world and/or to listen to stations attuned to your
tastes (like pandora.com ) .

Have you tried XM radio? It seems to provide the best reception and uses
very little in resources (less slow down loading pages, for example).

You may just visit some radio sites (ChoiceRadio, 777) or take some from the
list at Microsoft Media Radio Tuner
(http://www.windowsmedia.com/radiotun...ale=409&list=2).
Following the links on that page will make you able to either open the
corresponding website, or opening the selected radio channel with Windows
Media Player. And you'll be listening to various Internet radio stations in
