LNKs to MSDOS programs have generic icons

Vista 32 HP here. All my desktop shortcuts to my MSDOS apps show generic
white "document" icons. The proper icons (from the usual sources,
MORICONS.DLL, etc.) display fine in the properties page of the shortcut.
What's going on?

Hi Frank,

Try rebuilding the icon cache, see:

I'd already done the color-depth and delete-iconcache fiddles, with no result.
It's only MSDOS programs. I gather it's not a general problem? Any other
ideas?

Hi Frank,

Nothing immediately comes to mind. Are there other accounts on this machine
and does the same thing happen in them? I'd also look to video drivers, and
try switching to a different source to see if the problem lies in the .dll
file.

(BTW, for those lurking in Redmond, this is a vanilla Dell SP1 build of Home
Premium. And it's otherwise pleasantly crisper and more solid than I remember
RTM was last year.)

The problem's there in another (low-priv) acct. on this machine, as well.
Same prob. when I draw the icons from SHELL32 - displays on the
properties/choose_icon page, but not on the desktop or in Explorer list or
details. I guess file this one away, until another fossil comes along with
MSDOS or Win16 needs.

BTW, some of these forums are billed in web view as "moderated." In NNTP
view, there's plenty of noise. I haven't tried webforum view. Is that
cleaner? If this is OT, where should I ask?

Hi,

This is NNTP and is unmoderated, but there are plenty of web forums that
slurp content to/from here and clean it up. I don't care for them, but they
do have their benefits.

And, for completeness, in the better_late_than_never dept.: Raymond Chen did
indeed have the answer. WAD, dammit.
