I'm running Microsoft Vista Home Premium and am using the OS' backup utility.

How can I locate a specific file in the backup? The files are generically
labeled "backup 1" and "backup 2", etc., etc.

If, for instance, I want to restore or see only the "My Pictures" file, how
can I find iti in the backup?

Thanks for your help.

I've used the backup. I haven't tried to locate files from the .zips
though. I generally favor using Acronis. I suspect it can be a real
problem having looked through MSFT's descriptions of it.

Note this exchange on a Chat with the Backup Team at MSFT during July 2007.
I do believe that "Paul" is Paul Luber from the Core File Services team at
Microsoft. He is a program manager in the Windows Core File Services team
primarily focused on the Volume Shadow Copy service, and he has been
responsible for other storage technologies at Microsoft in the past. Before
he joined the Windows Core File Services team, Paul worked in Microsoft
Research in the area of performance analysis and optimizations:

Backup, System Restore, and Complete PC Backup Chat (July 11, 2007)
Chat Topic: Backup

Paul [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: You guys need to make it easy accessing individual files within the vhd
backup. Vhmount doesn't work as well as it could.
A: Feedback taken. This is a common request. I can't give any details on
future plans for this.

Paul [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: However, after doing the complete restore, I tried to restore all files
for all users and only restore points through 7/4 were listed. All the
others were ignored and I had to manually extract files from the ZIP images
to get back user data.
A: Yes, this happens because the backup catalog is also restored when you do
the CompletePC restore. Instead of manually opening the zips you could use
advanced restore and then select "restore from a backup made on a different
computer". Then you can point to the backup location.

That seems to be the story with much of Vista. LOL Feedback Taken. Common
Requests. No detail for future plans. When you buy Vista, as I've
consistently said, you get some nice features, but a helluva lot was left on
the cutting room floor. Let me translate. Sinofsky wanted money. MSFT
wanted money FOR TOYS so they dumped it out months before it was fixed.

I don't see any answer to your question here:

A Guide to Windows Vista Backup Technologies
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/tec...p/default.aspx

I don't see an answer to your question here:

If someone has experience with retrieving individual files from a Vista
backup and knows how, I hope they will post it right up. If Jill Zoeller
[MSFT] knows how to retrieve individual files from a Vista backup, I hope
she'll post how.

Good luck,

CH

Idaho's (no pun intended) Larry Craig out the door (Republican Right Wing
Governor appoints his successor).
Louisana's David Vitter who also broke the law--nada. No parade of right
wing Senator flunkies to remove Vitter 'cause a Democratic Governor would
appoint his successor. Lol Compassionate conservatives in your dreams.
