The updates are being downloaded to SoftwareDistribution, the temp location
they are being *run* from is on
the drive with the most free space, in your case to the removable drive.
You can delete them from the removal drive. The
SoftwareDistribution\downloads file clears itself roughly in about 10 days.
If you don't want Windows to use the large removable drive when updating,
then don't have it connected to the laptop when updating.
