"Locking your computer" -- it seems like FOREVER

I'm on a ThinkPad T61 running Vista Home Premium.

My computer is set to require a password or fingerprint when it comes back
from idling with the lid closed or the monitor off. Very, very often, the
"Locking your computer" screen stays on for a ridiculously long time without
ever getting to the password/fingerprint screen. What I usually have to do
is turn off the computer and reboot, but this is an enormous pain in the butt
because rebooting takes forever.

Has anyone else encountered this problem, and can you tell me how to fix it?
