I have a windows vista that boots OK, but after about 30 minutes the screen
becomes a bit distorted and the PC freezes. I cannot move mouse/keyboard
nor can I ping it. In safe mode it doesnt lock up.
Trying to find where to look. I have disbaled most startup apps and it
still locks up in normal mode.
Any suggestions ??

Carlo

Are you doing safe mode without network support?

Usually when you get a hard lock after a certain amount of time it'
because a component reached a temperature where it stops functioning.
used to run into this a lot with cheap add-in network cards. The
worked great for 15 minutes. Then hard lock.

Where your screen got distorted it hints it's video related. Perhap
safe mode uses a lower screen resolution? My first guess would be th
video hardware. See if you can swap it out to test if the problem goe
away

Just a guess but my first reaction would be to check for new graphics card
driver updates.

Which firewall, anti-virus, anti-spyware or security suite is installed?
There are some that cause problems which don't always appear immediately.

It has Mcafee. I turned it off in startup and services for testing. I
disabled the wwindows fireall also.
I am attempting a repair as it came up on last boot with the computer was
unable to start screen. It has been at attempting repair for the past
hour..

Do you think that is causing the lockups though? I agree with your comments
on mcafee, but this is a freinds PC so I would rather do that after th
lockup problem is cleared up

The problem you have sounds to me like hardware, especially your video
card, as others in this thread have already suggested.

This kind of thing has never happened to me with Norton, and I just don't
believe that McAfee would do it either.

If you were running a program I had written, maybe I could have left a
memory leak in to cause that kind of behavior. But then, maybe not - I was
pretty careful about such things, and so are Norton and McAfee - usually
:-)

Blanket statements like "McAfee and Norton are junk" don't necessarily
represent everyone's experience...

Disabling McAfee is not enough. You need to completely uninstall it.

Download and run the McAfee Consumer Product Removal Tool
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/U...val-Tool.shtml

McAfee is known to cause problems in Vista. Sometimes they don't show up
immediately.
Replace McAfee with the free AVG http://free.grisoft.com/ or Avast
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html, and Windows Firewall and Windows
Defender.

Is this a laptop? If so, the internal fan(s) may not be providing enough
cooling. (Dust buildup, sticky bearings, etc)
If the machine is a desktop, adequate cooling may be an issue, as is
memory timing and operating voltage.

A laptop may use video memory that is actually part of the main memory,
so main memory can be an issue as well, when you start looking at the
video distortion. Temperature control of the video card components can
also be an issue.
