locks up upon install

I can download updates and the computer shows the gray install box but I have
run it all night with no installation. I have ME and this is the first time
I can download but not install. I am having a similar experience with McAfee
Virus Scan which I have tried to download from AOL and Comcast. Both
programs totally lock up during the ActiveX download or, more likely, just
prior to the installation process. I have performed all of AOL's and
McAfee's suggested fixes with no luck.

I get no error messages and have tried eliminating everything except
explorer and systray in Ctrl-alt-delete. I have also tried to eliminate all
non-essential start up and background items. I have addressed the following:
mcinsctl.dll
mcgdmgr.dll
VSO
MCBIN
deleted all McAfee I could find
run Stinger

Any more suggestions?

Dunno about McAfee or AOL stuff but can you download to HDD then install
manually. I don't know a lot about ME but somewhere in the Windows folders
you will find the windows updates that you downloaded. Assuming you know
which KB you are after do a search for the KB number in the windows folder
and you should find the installer.exe for the individual updates. Run the
installers manually, that should work.

Or SUSE10, Unbunto, Mandriva not as painful as you may think and a joy to
use once you get past the culture shock. Oh yeah and the update systems
work properly.

Since you are having similar problems with other installs besides updates I
wonder if you are making sure you are specifically getting downloads for ME
and not another system? If you try to install XP downloads, for example, your
computer might not be able to install in ME.
