Recently my laptop has become unusable. Whenever I start it up it brings
me to the welcome screen where I click on my account, or any account for
that matter, and it starts to load windows. The problem is it will bring
me back to the welcome screen. I am essentially locked out of my
computer. I have looked all over the internet trying to find something
that will help me resolve this issue, but I have had no such luck.
Hopefully someone can help me on this website.

You need to describe how it returns to the Welcome Screen a bit better. Is
there any delay? drive activity? do you see anything happen at all when a
user account is selected? have they got passwords? do you know the
passwords?

Have you tried using Safe Mode?

There are only 2 accounts on my computer, mine and a guest one. Min
has a password which i know and it works when I use it, and the gues
account does not. Anyways, when I click my account and enter th
password, the accounts disappear, the ease of access button dissapears
and the red shut down button disappears. It still says Windows vist
business on the botton center. It stays this way for roughly
seconds, and then it goes right back to the original welcome screen
The drive is active while this is happening, and i have tried it i
safe mode. I have norton 2008 complete so hopefully it's not a virus o
some kind. All of this started happening when I completely drained th
battery, maybe that has something to do with it

I can think of 2 possibility's. Perhaps a corrupted Winlogin.exe or SAM in
the registry.

I don't really know what either of those are, is there anything i can
actually do to fix this, or do i need to just get a new harddrive?

Don't think you need a new hardrive! Don't know how you would extract
Winlogin if you cant login. When you attempt to log in does it say 'reset
password' below the password box when it comes back to the login screen? If
thats the case it thinks you are typing in a bad password. You could then
reset your password with your password disk if you made one. Does it happen
if you booted into safe mode?Hopefully one of the MVP's will post any idea's
they have.

So I have made a little bit of progress, but I still need help. My
laptop has a fingerprint scanner on it and if I boot the computer
normally and use that it loads windows. The problem now is when it is
loading windows explorer stops working. None of the icons come up, the
task bar doesn't come up, and can't even use the task manager. Any
thoughts?
