Log On Script slowness

We've been having problems with log on scripts taking extremely long periods
of time to complete in Windows Vista. It doesn't happen all the time, it only
happens occasionally for users, and it's the most prevalent after our domain
controllers are rebooted. It also seems to happen with clients that have been
off the network for an extended period of time. The issue that's occurring is
our log on script queries AD to get a list of groups the user is in, and then
it maps drives based on what groups the user is in. The script starts okay
but during times when it's slow it can take it 15-30min to complete. When
querying AD in Vista, a local copy of the schema is cached here:
C:\Users\UserID\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Sc hCache
Normally, this file does not need to be recached, but occasionally some
workstations try to download a new copy anyway. If I delete the cache file
and log back on, the download of the schema is normally very fast. Sometimes
though, it takes forever for the file to download, approximately 15-30min.
This is what causes the log on script to hang, as it does not complete until
the file has been cached. How do I work around this, or how do I correct this
issue?

I don't have a specific fix for you. I will note that Vista is known
for its slow I/O. They fixed some of the hard drive issues in SP1 but
it still sucks to the network, to USB, etc. I have some network
operations that are painfully slow, for no apparent reason. Same ops
are fine on XP to the same shares.

Don't expect MS to fix the IO issues - they've been ignoring them and
are already on to Win 7.
