Login Screen disappears on SBS 2003

I have a frustrating probem in that every so often the login screen on my SBS
2003 server console disappears. I know the console is OK because a reboot of
the server brings it back to normal. Is there some process I can restart to
get the login screen? Or perhaps something else that wakes it back up without
having to reboot the server? I can get on the server through Remote Web
Workplace just fine if necessary to restart some process.

Hi Boxer, are there any events that appear in the event logs that relate to
this, thats always the first place to check with something like this.
James.

Do you have APC (UPS) software installed on the server?

APC: Windows logon screen disappears

I've seen this happen with older versions of VNC installed on a
server/workstation just after someone has used Remote Desktop to connect
to the server/workstation.

I've seen it take 10 minutes to come back... Installing a newer version
of VNC resolves the problem.

It could also be several other things - processes....

Thanks for responding James... I don't see anything unusual in the events
logs... maybe Leythos (responding below) is onto something?

Thanks for responding Leythos... unfortunately mine never comes back unless I
reboot the server.

I had a similiar issue but it didn't occur everytime I would remote into the
server. I use a Belkin 6-port PS2/Keyboard switch box and have 3 servers
connected so I would only have to use 1 single console to access any server.
I thought at first the box was going bad becaue my mouse and keyboard would
be locked and I could not see the login screen. So I switch the server in
question to adifferent port and got the same results. So I then disconnected
the server from the switch box and connected the mouse, keyboard and monitor
directly to the server. Same results. Long story short. A bad mouse. Not
sure if this is your issue but your issues are simliar.

Thanks for your response Russ... actually the console screen is gray, and I
do see the arrow move when I move the mouse. It's just that nothing happens
when I press cntrl+alt+del to get the login window. Per "coastal California"
below I tried a different keyboard and mouse with no change. I tried to
update the video drivers last time it happened and the response was that I
was at the most current release. I am at SP1.
