You may need to try another password removal utility.
You might also consider that there may be some more pronounced problems with
the disk, and in that case, it would be prudent to connect the drive to
another XP or Vista system and back up the data. Taking an image of the
drive is often a good and quick way to do this. You can use the Acronis
TrueImage trial version - it should take under two weeks to fix this.
One thing I have found helped with XP - while you have the drive attached to
the other system, locate the one or two very large files in the root,
pagefile.sys and hiberfil.sys, delete them and clear the wastebasket.
These files will be rebuilt and their absence can sometimes help the machine
boot.
As this version of Vista has "home" in the name, you don't need to worry
about destroying encryption keys.
