Logitech Optical Mouse

I purchased a Gateway Notebook with Vista Premium. Then I connected a
Logitech Optical mouse corded with USB port. I can use the mouse at first
then it asks for driver which it cannot find. I called Logitech and they
told me that there are no drivers for this product. It should just work
automatically when I plug into the USB port.

Every time I turn on the notebook, it asks for the drivers which it cannot
find. If I cancel the search, then the mouse no longer works.

Can anyone help me? Have no idea what to do from here. I was able to
update the driver once in device manager but then it went back to trying to
find the driver the next time I turned on the notebook.

If Logitech claims to not have a driver available, what can I do?

Please let me know. Thanks.

When it asks for the driver, point it to the Windows file on the c: drive.

I had the same kind of problem with a gateway notebook and logitech
corded mouse ( same problem actually). Turned out that the USB's were
not hooked up !! Believe it or not. I took it to a shop and the mouse
worked for them. I gave the notebook back to the seller, they have a 30
day return policy. See if the mouse works for anyone else and go from
there. Gateway 1616 (same ?)

The USB ports do in fact work. They are recognize when plugged it's just
that the driver not does work and Logitech claims to have no driver so I
don't know where to go from here.

Thanks for the reply.

USB mice function as what's called a "Composite" USB device. Drivers are
required for both the HID ( Human Interface Devices ) and the actual mice.
From your description it sounds like the system is prompting for the HID
drivers.

So how I would get these drivers. I was able to get the drivers installed
once but when I restared the notebook it was trying to install all over again.

Can you point me in the right direction?

The required driver is already included in Windows. Since the mouse is not
being recognised properly it implies you have a hardware problem, whether it
is the mouse or the USB ports that are the problem. Could even be a broken
wire in the mouse cable that makes intermittent connections.

It's a little complicated. First you need to add a System Environment
variable:
DevMgr_Show_NonPresent_Devices
and set it's value = 1
This allows Device Manager to show 100% of the devices, including
the Plug-&-Play Phantom/Not-Connected, but known devices in the
current Hardware profile.

Once setup, Open Device Manager, Click "View" and tic/check the
option "Show Hidden Devices". Check for the presence of a category
called "Unknown Devices". This is where devices are placed that are
unknown by their VID identifier string. Report back if you have this
category and the number of entries within it.
