How long can two SBS run in the same network?

I have a problems where we can't backup a SBS 2003 server and we have a
new SBS 2008 server ready to go - we just need to move the data between
the machines, but they want to do it over the holiday, remotely.

If I drop the 2008 SBS server into the same network, disable DHCP, how
long before either sees the other and shuts-down?

Hello Leythos,

Thanks for your post.

I am not sure why you would like to connect the SBS 2008 server to the same SBS 2003 domain network JUST to " move the data between the machines "? If they are in the
same site/area, why don't configure the router which can easily connect the two SBS domain networks for communication and moving data? Otherwise, if they are in different
site/area, have you considered a VPN connections between the two domains/forests?

Here are some information for your reference that if two SBS domains exists in the same physical network.

More information:

Several services do not start when Windows Small Business Server 2003 restarts during a domain migration

Hope this helps.

It's being done out of speed/necessity, but this doesn't answer my
question.

VPN would be slow, there is more than 100GB of data to move.

Router would be nice, but, then I would have to try and setup mappings
to allow me to connect to it through the firewall and then through the
router.

Since both servers have 1 gbps connections, putting them side/side in
the network would be best, but I don't know how long before one or the
other shuts down due to finding the other.

If you run the Sourcetool from the SBS 2008 DVD on the SBS 2003 server you
will get 21 days. This is part of the migration path and has some
prerequisites.

This'll do the 21-day thing:

Software Update to Support "Join Domain" Migration of Windows Small Business
Server 2003 Data and Settings to New Hardware

Hi Leythos,

Thanks for your response and describing the detailed situation.

Yes, I think the KB943494 shared by others gives you the answer. The article should fit for SBS 2008 server as well.

If you have any other questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to post back.

Cheers.

Either one causes the server to crash (sbs 2008) and joining to the same
domain is not possible.

That article also makes it clear that the grace period without that change
is 7 days---that's new information for me--and maybe it's enough for Leythos
to get the job done.

We do this all the time.

Give the new SBS server a 2nd IP address on the internal NIC, thats in
the same subnet as the old server.

Copy the data over.

Becuase we are so quick with roll outs I have never seen an sbs box shut down!

BTW RichCopy is your friend for this type of work.
