How long does the Service Pack 3 update take?

I've tried twice to install the SP3 update. After five plus hours with the
status bar not moving past the 3/4 mark I cancelled the update. Is this
normal? How long does it usually take? I had the same issue on my wife's
laptop.

Doesn't sound normal. Did you wife's laptop update?
How are you installing SP3, via WU or from a full file download?

Perhaps contact MS as suggested by Engel.

I installed WinXP SP3 via Windows Update exactly per the above and the
entire process took close to two (2) hours. A lot depends on how busy the
servers are.
