How long does an unaswered message persist?

Let's say one of my contacts is on line (or at least their status is showing
'on-line') and I send a message. If they don't see the bubble for it right
away (they have stepped away from their desk for a few minutes say), how long
does the message saying there is a message from someone stay on their
desktop? In other words, if they don't see or notice that someone wants to
start a conversation then and there, what controls how long the item remains
down on the bottom of my desktop? Does it stay there indefinitely?

Greetings,

The conversation stays open until they close it, so yes, indefinitely. Of course if you lose
power or something it won't be there when it restarts however.
