"Secure" and "free" may not be both available to the degree you need.

You can just use the Remote Desktop functions, but you also have to use
Dynamic DNS so that your system is findable, and your router has to be
configured to allow these packets to pass the correct ports.

tightVNC for desktop works with vista.
But there are issues.
It's incompatible with Aero, so it modifies the vista color scheme
while it's connected...I guess it's actually vista that's modifying the
color scheme for compatibility.

Normally, one would use the vnc viewer to access it.
That requires open ports on the remote end that may not be
available if you don't control the remote router.
IIRC
I solved that problem by running it thru ssh.
That also addressed the privacy problem.

You can access it thru a browser. Don't know if that
solves the open port issue. Just tried it and firefox wanted
to install a boatload of java on my laptop...and the installation
failed.

Nice thing about vnc is that it works on most platforms including linux
and windows mobile on your pda. If you looked, you could probably find a
version that works on two tin cans and a string.
Unfortunately, there are many versions of VNC.
Not all are free.
Not all support file transfer.
Tight VNC does and has what appears to be a speedier display driver add-on.
