When looking for updates, the progress bar just hangs.

Not sure what's going on, but whenever I try to look for new updates, Windows
Update will just look for [what it seems to be] an eternity. I've tried
letting it sit, thinking maybe there are quite a few updates, but even after
twenty minutes or so...it still just shows the scrolling green progress bar.
("Checking for the latest updates for your computer...")

Any ideas as to what's preventing me from seeing the updates?

I'm seeing the same thing on XP Pro SP2. The update starts to download but
hangs on the IE update (KB896727).

Thanks JJ, I'll try the suggestions. I was able to determine from the log
file that my XP Pro system's Cryptographic Services isn't running and if I
try to start it, get an error. Another XP system that updated ok does have
Cryptographic Services running. Haven't figured out yet how to get the
service to restart. Any suggestions?

I have also found this Microsoft KB article that I will review:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822798 whose topic is "You cannot install
some updates or programs".

I'm not getting anywhere unfortunately. I've tried tips on getting
Cryptographic Services to run but it won't. In probing the WindowsUpdate.log
file messages, I found this one that says after it found 8 downloads that :
"2005-08-11 18:12:18 544 ed4 DnldMgr * Update is not allowed to download
due to regulation" . Any idea what 'due to regulation' means?

I've run SFC /scannow and it didn't report anything to the screen (would
there be a log file?) so I'm assuming my system files are OK. I unregistered
and reregistered a list of .dll's supposedly used by Cryptographics Services.
I"ve deleted the CatRoot2 directory. None of this let's me start the
service.

I"m puzzled.

With Microsoft's help I learned that I had used the wrong XP system CD when I
did a repair install a month ago and that caused my license not to match
something else. So I did another repair install using my original SP1a CD,
then upgraded to SP2 and then was able to download and install all subsequent
updates. My problems with Crytographic Services are over finally.
