Looping update configuring fase 3 of 3 ... 0% message

I don't know what's happening.
After a fresh start of my laptop with Vista, the message of an update
process came. It was something like update configuring 1 of 3 and then
configuring 3 of 3. After this last one, the computer closes and restarts
automatically and starts over with configuring 3 of 3. This goes on
endlessly. Don't know how to interrupt.
Shut off the computer, got an system restore option, did that and again it
came with configuring 3 of 3 in a loop.
I'm totally lost what is happening here and what to do.
