I have two computers, on one of them i went to the windows update
area by clicking on the link in the start menu (as always) and
downloadeed 31 critical updates. Reboot and everything is copasetic.

On the second computer which needed only 8 critical updates, I
rebooted and i have lost several functions. One is the "windows
installer": I can't install or uninstall a program which needs this
installer. Error message is windows uninstaller doesn't work. I went
to the MSwebsite to track down this error and have done the
recommended, but to no avail. Also Microsoft anti-spyware has gone
south, doesn't appear anymore in the task tray. And I cannot get to
windows update site with the link in the start menu. I click i get
the clock for a few seconds which then disappears.

Those are the three things i notice right away, maybe there are more
things that have gone wrong. I luckily have an image of C: drive which
I reinstall and everything is once again ok. I have gone through this
process two times and it's the same.

anyone experiencing anything similar?

thanks.

I have experienced the same problems on 5 out of 9 Windows 2000 servers. We
had installed the latest updates on a test server and went through testing it
for a couple of days with no problems encountered and then decided to upgrade
the rest of the computers. On 5 of 9 you could not do anything that seemed
to use a browser interface such as:
- Nothing showed up in right hand frame in Windows Explorer. Switch it to
classic mode and it worked fine.
- Add / Remove programs would not work.
- Windows update web site would not respond properly

To get around the problem which seemed to be linked to one of the latest IE
updates we reinstalled the IE 6 SP1 Service Pack (Reinstall all components)
and then reinstalled the updates one at a time testing in between. The
problem seems to be related to the KB896688. I have no problem recreating
the issues by installing the KB896688 update. We have installed all updates
except this one. The interesting thing is that 4 of the 9 servers worked and
these were all HP Proliant DL360-G4 while the 5 that did not work were all HP
Proliant-G3. I would really be interested to know if your server also
happened to be a HP Proliant-G3 because I could not find anything else that
was different between the G3 and G4 servers but I am still looking.

Hope this helps and looking forward to Microsoft comments.

Brilliant of you to track it down. I didn't really have the time. I'll
install the others when i get a chance (minus KB896688) so as to
confirm your data.

My computers are not Hp's. Just clones I built myself.

Possiblity:

Systems that have changed the default Access Control List permissions on the
%windir%\registration directory may experience various problems after you
install the Microsoft Security Bulletin MS05-051 for COM+ and MS DTC:
