losing 256 display

Recently my 5900z got stuck in stupid, froze on desktop without any icons.
Did a quick restore, not everything came back as it should. My display is
now only 2 color and 16 color and 640x480 pixel. I did have the 256 display
and usually kept it on the 600x800 pixel. I have done everything I know to
do but nothing works. Have tried to do updates but not working. Any
suggestions?
