Many alternatives. IrfanView should work fine as long as you are willing to
read up on its settings and such and go to the IrfanView forums when you
have issues with IrfanView...
- Are you opeing the picture *in* IrfanView both times - viewing it in
IrfanView before you resize it and viewing it in IrfanView after you resize
it?
- If you choose to open the picture in something other than IrfanView
(Windows Fax & Picture Viewer, Paint, etc) - does it show correctly?
- If you open IrfanView and select "Options" --> "Properties" -->
"JPG/PCD/GIF" tab --> is the second checkbox checked? ("Load as grayscale
(Please REMEMBER when you activate this option!)") -- I am not making up
what the checkbox says - I guess it happened so often, they changed the text
there. hah
- Are you utilizing IrfanView for more than resizing pictures? Did you know
with a plugin (PowerToy) you could resize pictures in Windows XP without
third party products?

Picasa is a good free program with a way to 'backup' the pictures (or share
them) on the web using Google.
