Loss of power during update configuration

I was updating my laptop with all the update for vista home premium and we
lost power and the computer shut down. Now when I try to start it up again I
only get a black screen. Has anyone encountered this and how do I get my
laptop back to functioning again.

The exact same thing happened to me, only on Windows XP. I tried booting to
save mode (with command prompt, with vga), last known good configuration and
nothing helped.

I found plenty of topics regarding the problem with black screen using
Google, but none regarding power loss during update installation. I still
haven't tried repairing installation using Win XP CD, but I'll try to do that
today.
