Loss of slave hard drive

Hi guys,

After installing a set of windows updates my slave hard drive has been
deactivated, this happened before but didn't realise the connection at that
time. The only way I can now use the slave hard drive is to treat it like a
new disk and format it which is really annoying. Is there anyway to stop this
from happening again and is there anyway to re-initialize the disk without
formatting it and losing all my data on there?
