Loss Of Sound

My sound was working fine untill I installed the Direct X 9.0c End user
Runtime from the Microsoft Update Site. When I use the Direct X trouble
shooter I get error code 0x00000000 (User Verification Software) failure at
step 19. Any help getting my sound back would be appreciated. I'm running
Windows 98 SE.
