Lost Accessories files with windows updates

After loading SP2 and periodically with other security updates, I experience
total lock up when trying to choose any utilities loaded in 'accessories'
under program files. It's like they go away and the hard drive just spins
looking for them. Without doing a restore manually, all other systems tools
like defrag become lost in space...

any ideas? dell laptop with xp home, btw
