Other than confirming that your telephone line is working, a dial tone is
meaningless with regards to a DSL broadband connection. I am assuming it is
a DSL connection since you mention the dial tone error. You really should
be using the Ethernet connection option rather than the USB connection type.
Reset the modem by unplugging the power cord and wait for about one minute.
Plug the power cord back into the modem and see if this clears your problem.
Try to use that Ethernet connection option, it will work much better for
you.
