Lost Data in Word program

I spent an entire day working on a newspaper I write each month. Normally I
save after each page is complete. Today I didn't. For no appearant reason,
as I was working on page 10 of this document the screen went white, as though
I was on a new document. It showed that I had over 3,000 pages and then when
I tried to open the edit on the menu I got a not responding message with no
code or anything. Before I new it the machine was rebooting. Is the data
forever lost?
I have the XP program. Thanks for any help you can offer.
