Lost ie shortcuts after updates

After installing updates yesterday, and downloading and installing Windows
Live Essentials, I disovered that all of my shortcuts to Internet explorer
were gone from my Start menu and quick launch menu bar. In it's place, in
the Start Menu, it simply had the (globe) icon and said "Internet". When I
clicked on that icon, it opened up the Internet Options screen. I Looked for
the program files where I expected them to be (c:/Program files/Internet
Explorer), but they were not there. However, since I had put my "links" on
my task bar, I found that if I clicked on a link in the list, it would open
up Internet Explorer. I could also get to it by going to START/RUN and
typing in iexplore.exe.

I finally found the file C:/Windows/ie8/explore.exe and created new
shortcuts, but I am concerned about what happened. Also, I attempted to go
to a restore point before the updates and the new download and got a message
that the system could not be restored to that point.

I also discovered that my entire "Games" folder is gone and I haven't
figured that one out yet either. Has anyone else experienced these problems?

Always state your full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3; Vista 64-bit SP2;
Win7 RC; Win7 RTM) when posting in a forum or newsgroup. Please do so in
your next reply.

I figured it out with some info I found on another post. All I had to do was
go to Control Panel - Add/Remove Window Components and reinstall the missing
items from my XP installation disc.

UPDATE:- OK- I have discovered (after I was starting to think that I had
gone crazy) that the IE icon placed on my Start menu when I re-installed the
missing items from my installation disk, does not give me the same browser
screen header that I get if I use the C:/Windows/ie8/ie8.exe icon. The Icon
on my start menu brings up a browser that has tabbed browsing but the browser
screen that I get when I use the ie8 icon in the program files list does not
have tabbed browsing, and when I open up the internet options, it does not
give me the option to enable tabbed browsing. I want create a shortcut to IE
to put on my quick launch bar, but I can't find the target file for the IE
icon that is on my start menu. It is not indicated as a shortcut and when I
right click on it, the drop down menu I get, does not give me the option to
create a shortcut. Anyone got any ideas on how I can find the right program
file to create the right shortcut?
I am running Windows XP.
