Live Mail did an unrequested and unauthorized upgrade and now I am missing
my junk mail button. I can't find any options to put it back. How can I
either get my old live mail back or get the junk mail button added to the
newest version of Live Mail? Thanks.

Not missing in the version I am using. When did this unauthorized update
take place?

Hi, Mike.

I'm using Build 15.4.3508.1109, the newest released version of Windows Live
Mail.

I do not have a Junk Mail button when I'm in News mode. But when I click
the little Mail icon at the bottom of the Folder List, it switches to Mail
Mode - and the Junk button magically appears in the Ribbon.

Even in News, though, if I right-click on a message in the Message List, the
context menu includes "Junk email", with several options on a further
fly-out menu. But these options are only to manage my blacklist and
whitelist for MAIL senders; the "Mark as junk" option is not available for
NEWS posts.

Like Norman, I'm very curious as to how and when "Live Mail did an
unrequested and unauthorized upgrade..." to your computer! Nobody else has
reported such an incident, to my knowledge. And I see that you posted using
a different news client, rather than WLM, so we can't gain much insight from
the headers of your message.

Have you scanned your computer for malware? Recently?

They don't have to ask and don't need your authority. From the Windows Live Terms:

<quote>
We may automatically check your version of the software. We may also automatically download to your computer upgrades to the
software to update, enhance, and further develop the service.
</quote>

Apart from that, I'd also be interested to learn what upgrade - that affects the UI - has been installed.

Iirc all upgrades require one to check a box or agree to a prompt.

WLM 2011 has multiple modes (Mail, News, Feeds, Contacts, Calendar)
- the first three modes (above) have four tabs, the latter two only one)
- In mail mode the Junk button is on the ribbon (on the Home tab)
- In news mode right click on a message and scroll to Junk Mail and select
one of the available options (e.g Add Sender to Block Senders list)

If you don't see the the Ribbon (you'll have to enable it)
- rt click on a blank area adjacent to the tabs and uncheck 'Minize the
Ribbon'

The only way to return to an earlier version is to uninstall WLM 2011 and
reinstall 2009
- the last 2009 version available is QFE3 and released (bits frozen) in May
2010

I have the same build, but now it is back to normal. I didn't do anything
to the program. The button bar looked totally different and so I assumed an
upgrade. I have an older version on my desktop that has not upgraded to the
newer ones. I have no idea why it changed yesterday and is back today.

WRT computers, never make assumptions. Updates to Windows Live Mail are
offered through, "Microsoft Updates", which has to be enabled by the user,
and which offers updates for MS products other than Windows, as well as for
Windows. If you have elected to allow Microsoft Updates to automatically
install updates, you have authorized them. If you click to display
information about which updates are available, you can choose not to install
the updates. Therefore, there are no "unauthorized" updates possible.
