Lost Media Center after SP3 update

I recently reformated the drive and installed Windows XP MCE, then I updated
to SP2 each time I checked that MC was working Ok. Finally I updated to SP3
and some other Windows Updates using the internet. Now I am not able to
start the Media Center.

I received a message that indicates that says:
"C:\Windows\ehome\ehshell.exe" failed strong name valication. And that it
may have not been fully signed with the correct private key.

Any idea of how to fix this other than re-installing Windows?

Close Media Center
Click on the Start menu, choose run and type cmd
Now execute the following commands and after each command press the
Enter Key:-
regsvr32.exe atl.dll
C:\WINDOWS\eHome\ehSched /unregServer
C:\WINDOWS\eHome\ehSched /service
C:\WINDOWS\eHome\ehRecvr /unregServer
C:\WINDOWS\eHome\ehRecvr /service
C:\WINDOWS\eHome\ehRec.exe /unregServer
C:\WINDOWS\eHome\ehRec.exe /regserver
C:\WINDOWS\eHome\ehmsas.exe /unregServer
C:\WINDOWS\eHome\ehmsas.exe /regserver

Finally restart Media Center.

Have you tried removing the failed SP3, then re-installing?
Or even trying to install SP3 again over the one you have.

One should always backup the system before making major changes. SP3 is
a very major change.

Try the following:-

Download and reinstall the .NET Framework 1.1 SP1 from the following
location:-

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Go to the Start menu, choose Run and type cmd to launch Command Prompt
window and there copy and paste the following:-

%windir%\ehome\medctrro.exe /o /p RunOnce and press the Enter key.

Restart the system and try to launch Media Center. Does it help?

I tried this and I do not recommend it. It seems that more stuff is not
working correctly after re-installing SP3.

Now I will definately need to reformat and reinstall Windows.

Since you clipped the rest of the thread, it's hard to tell exactly to what

The only content that someone using a newsreader will see is exactly what
you typed in your message. In the future, leave the thread intact, it helps
people follow the problem and is a valuable resource of info in the future.

If what you typed is exactly what you typed on screen, then the problem may
be the way you typed it. It should be "%windir%\ehome\medctrro.exe /o /p
RunOnce" (no quotes and note the spaces), if you want to try without the
system variable, type "c:\windows\ehome\medctrro.exe /o /p RunOnce"
(assuming your PC has "windows" at the system directory).
