Lost my desktop when joining a domain

Hello, I've got an XP workstation that has been running standalone for
quite a while. I've got a lot of icons and my desktop configured the
way I like it.
When I joined the domain to connect to the new server, I got a whole
new desktop without most of my icons. I can see them if I login
standalone but don't see them when I'm on the network.

Can someone tell me what I needed to do to add this machine to the
domain without losing my desktop settings. Also, how can I fix this
short of copying shortcuts, etc. ??

Thanks a lot for your help,

Mark

Mark- Unfortunately, this is a very common problem. Let me ask you a couple
questions before i make any suggestions. Is this a W2K3 SBSss domain? Which
method did you use to switch from Workgroup to Domain?

Just an outline here, I've dealt with this a few times.

In documents and settings you will find 2 users

Mark
Mark.Domain

If you copy from Mark to Mark.Domain you will recover most everything. You
might have to log on under a different id, admin, to do this right.

But it works.

This is "expected" behavior ..not a "problem" IMHO.

Matt, yes it is a W2K3 SBS domain. I used the Network Identification
Wizard to do the job for me.

Mark - The best way i've found to handle workgroup to SBS domain migrations
is to add the user account to sbs, add the computer account to sbs and then
go to the client PC and open a web browser. go to
http://servername/ConnectComputer . This wizard will migrate your user
profile and your PC onto the SBS domain.

NOTE: This only works going from Workgroup to Domain not from Domain to
Domain.
Hope that helps,
Matt

You could also run the mover user utility from Microsoft resource kit.

Hi.

The easiest way for you to retain your original desktop is to use the built
in tool for copying profiles. In all books I've read it is a big no no to use
windows explorer for this task.

Login as domain administrator
Right click properties on my computer and choose the tab advanced.
There you will find MS built in tool to acomplish your task.
Click user profiles and then choose

local computer name\username COPY TO (and here is the dangerous part).

You must choose a location ie. c:\documents and settings\target profile

Do not, and I mean do not omit the path to the target profile because this
tool starts with deleting the contents of the target location. This means
that if you simply choose c:\documents and settings then it would first wipe
that directory...trust me I've seen it happened and it is not a pretty sight
when you realize that your start menu is totally empty.

The last step is to choose who is permitted to use this profile. Here you
would enter
domain\username

Done.

Now everything is back to the way it was when your computer was a standalone
machine...shortcuts, favorites etc.

This procedure is something that MS have not changed at least since NT4 and
it could use some improvement. But the most important part is that it works.

Good luck from Sweden
