I typed a very lengthy document into notepad (I was planning to cut and paste
it into another messageforum). And I saved the document to my desktop. A few
minutes later I go back to it only to notice that it's turned into an MS DOS
Application!!! I don't understand what happened, and all of that typing I did
is now lost. PLEASE HELP!

Dell Dimension E521 Desktop
Windows Vista Home Premium

What does "turned into an MS DOS Application" mean? Remember that we
can't see your computer and you need to be descriptive. What happens
when you double-click the icon for the document? What happens when you
right-click it and choose "Open With" (Notepad)?

What do you mean DOS application? Right click on the file and select "open
with" then notepad.

Are you sure that it is not just the icon that has changed? What is in the
Properties of the icon/file? What happens when you start Notepad and then
Open the file?

Ok, I right clicked it like you said, and there is no choice for "open with".
I must've done something wrong when I saved it to my desktop. What I am
saying is, I typed something in notepad, and I chose "file>save as" so that I
could come back to it later. I saved it to my desktop. But when I came back
to it, I noticed that the icon, not the title of the file, had changed. It
still says "draft to panic survivor" but instead of the notepad icon, it
shows something else, and when I double clicked it to open it, MS DOS opens
and I get this error message:

16 bit MS-DOS Subsystem
C:\Users\Maria\Desktop\DRAFTT~1.COM
The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction.
CS:1205 IP:01a5 OP:63 6b 20 6f 66 Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.

then it shows two buttons "close" and "ignore".

Ok, someone on the Dell messageboard told me what to do. He said to open up
Notepad, then choose "open" and on file type choose "all file types" and it
should open. And it did! I got my document back! So problem is solved.

Open Notepad and then select the file from within. You could also rename the
file with a .txt extention.

Susan,

Also rename it to something.txt instead of something.com, it is the .com
part that is causing it to be 'executed' as an DOS application.
