LOST my wuapi.dll -- reward offered

I've got a Sony Vaio laptop. Haven't used it since May. Back in
school and want to update. Cannot get updates. I'm using a wireless
connection from school -- I go to the update site and the dang
computer searches for 3-4 minutes, then displays a message saying it
can't access update. Arrrrrrrrrrrrrgh.

Searching this group, I found suggestions to re-register some files.

Go to Start>Run and key in:
regsvr32 wuapi.dll
Click on OK or hit ENTER
Click on OK in the RegSvr32 dialogue box

When I tried to re-register wuapi.dll, the computer told me it can't
locate it.

BTW, the update site goes to v5, if that makes any difference. (At
home with my desktop, it goes to v6).

What should I do to update my laptop? Thanks!

O, Fishy, you're always having problems!

Let's start with the basic information you should *always* include when
posting to a newsgroup: What Windows version?

Can you access Windows Update if you connect directly (i.e., not
wirelessly)? Have you tried temporarily disabling your firewall and/or
anti-virus application? (CAREFUL!) Deleting Temporary Internet Files?

1. See the "Need more help? Tell us what problem you are having" section of
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=ph;en-us;6527

2. You cannot install some updates or programs
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;822798

3a. Check Windowsupdate.log (%windir%\Windowsupdate.log) for errors
associated with the download/install.

How to read the Windowsupdate.log file:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=902093

3b. Compare errors to those listed here:
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/archive...date_codes.htm and/or go to
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com > click on Help and Support link in left
pane > Solve problems on your own.

4. Windows Update Checklist:

Click Start, select RUN, now Type (or copy and paste) the following command then
click OK:
%windir%\System32\rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132
%windir%\inf\au.inf

You will be requested to put in your WinXP CD, if you've installed the Service packs
redirect to:
Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386 on your hard drive.

Hi Bear.
Hey -- it's been months since I had a problem!
Yes -- I've turned off the firewall and the antivirus. No joy.
I cannot "connect directly." It's a laptop. Always worked before.
It's a Sony (Vaio) and I'm using Windows XP Home SP 1.

Can you help me?

Please include all of previous message(s) in your replies to the newsgroup.

> I cannot "connect directly."...Always worked before.

'Connect directly' means connecting via a dial-up or broadband (DSL, cable)
modem (vs. connecting wirelessly). If you don't have a direct connection
available, say so.

Were you able to connect successfully to Windows Update using wireless
before?

Nothing in 1, 2, 3 or 4 in my previous reply helped?

Hi Bear --
My laptop is wireless. Period. No direct connections. I last updated
in April 2005. Everything was successful then. Haven't used the laptop
since, and now I can't update. I get error #0x8DDD0004.
I have tried these things:
1. Renamed the catroot2 folder.
2. Turned off AVG, Spybot, and Zone Alarm.
3 Rebooted. More than once.
4. Gone to services. msc and made sure that Cryptographic,
Automatic Update Services, and BITS are set to automatic. Stopped each,
closed; then restarted them, just in case.
5. Checked the Windows Update log. Last entry was 4-13-05. There
are NO, repeat NO, entries for the efforts I have made in this last week of
August to update. Nada! Zilch. Zip.
6. Registered a bunch of files, as suggested in another post. I
got ERRORS when trying to reregister the following:
regsvr 32 WUAPI.DLL
regsvr 32 WUWEB.DLL
regsvr 32 WUPS.DLL
regsvr 32 WUCLTUI.DLL
regsvr 32 WUAUENG1.DLL
All these game me a message: "FAILED -- THE SPECIFIED MODULE COULD NOT BE
FOUND."

I went to the sites you listed in #1 and #2. Nothing there resembled my
problem. So I didn't try any of the fixes. I went to the site in #4.
Again, my problem wasn't listed.

Helllllllllllpppppppp! I'm drowning!

Scared to death -- here I am on this superfast Wireless network and without
updates!

SOLVED!!!!!

Followed Taurian's suggestion in an archived message and installed
WindowsUpdateAgent20-x86.exe. I can get my updates now!

PA Bear -- Thanks anyways. Maybe you could take a look at two other posts I
made in the last week in this group, which don't have answers yet.

Hi;

Fishy wrote:

> I copied and pasted that command. Failed.

Click Start/Search; type in wuapi.dll and select the drive where
Windows is installed (typically the C: drive). Mark the option to
search Hidden and System folders.

Ideally you will see 3 returns:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuapi.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache\wuapi.dll
C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386\wuapi.dll

If you are missing the one from the System32 folder, then the second one
(in the DLLCache folder) should be the most current. Copy that one to
System32. If you are missing both the first two, you should still have
an older copy in the Service Pack subfolder.

You may see one (or more) in the SoftwareDistribution folder set. If so
you need to do a Restart into Safe Mode then move the most recent one in
that set of folders out into the System32 folder. Then reboot back
into normal mode.

Once you have the file in the System32 folder, on the Start/Run line
enter: regsvr32 wuapi.dll --- you should get an OK message.

Now go to
http://update.microsoft.com/microsof...ult.aspx?ln=en and
wait for the page to completely load and to get your AU/MU files
synched. Watch for the yellow notice at the top of the IE window
alerting you for permission to install updates from MS. Once all that
is complete, do not start a scan. Just close out all open apps and
Restart the computer.

Once the computer is restarted check the version of wuapi.dll in your
System32 folder --- it should now be version 5.8.0.2469.

%windir%\System32\rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132
%windir%\inf\au.inf

It works for me - Note -

There is a space between rundll32.exe and setupapi,
There is a space between Section and DefaultInstall
There is a space between DefaultInstall and 132
There is a space between 132 and %windir%\inf\au.inf

It is all suppose to be one line – unfortunately it wraps on the NG.
