Hi,

It's likely not going to get fixed. Niether OS was designed for dual
booting, and it's not that common of a practice outside of the geek
community.

Hi Cheddarhead--

We've really covered this extensively on this thread for over a year. It's
exactly as Rick says. Several of us have talked to MSFT about it, and they
felt given their time considerations, and the number of people that dual
boot relative to their users on the planet, and the amount of work that
would have been required to back port to correct the situation that it was
not worth it.

I honestly don't know how much work it would have taken but some people here
might have a better idea.

In the scheme of millions of users dual booting is not as common as it is
for most enthusiasts--probably a lot of the people you know and I know.

I love dual booting because when you've made folders and settings in an OS
that has lasted about 6 years, it saves time and real estate.

This may be redundant for you, but I want to make sure you know you can
shortcut from your Vista desktop to your XP desktop and although you can't
access XP's OE but can merge Outlook easily, you can access any file or
folder on XP from Vista with a couple mouseclicks.

I have also noticed(Win Mail must have undergone some kind of change) that
what I send to Winmail on Vista now shows up in OE mail in XP.

If you're on the Vista desktop (let's say it is on C:\ drive), you can reach
the XP desktop by using

[XP Drive Letter]\Documents and Settings\Cheddarhead's Profile\Desktop

and from your XP Dsktop you can access Vista by using

[Vista Drive Letter]Users\Cheddarhead's Profile\Desktop

This may reduce your need to actually have to boot to XP which I do from
time to time to make sure the AV is running correctly, etc.

If a file is really important, I just drag it from the XP desktop to Vista's
desktop or any folder I want it in. Sometimes I move them around to
different drives if I want more space on one drive and the folder is large.

If you do boot to XP's desktop, when you go back to your Vista boot, as a
reflex create a restore point manually.

Good luck,

CH

With so many applications and hardware not working with Vista dual booting
is becoming a hell of a lot more common and not just in the geek community.

What do you mean by this? I would really like to share my OE/WM [newsgroup
only] mailstores between my XP laptop and my Vista Desktop machine, but this
must be impossible. So what do you mean?

I'm wondering if there is a way to manually save a Vista restore point???
Object would be to save the restore point before booting to XP. I backup my
Vista fairly often but would be nice to do a quick save of a Vista restore
point and then restore the restore point if need be.

I am actually tri-booting on this gateway machine... ubuntu, xp and vista
ultimate...

It just is annoying that it wasnt thought of while vista was being
developed, it really can't be that big of an issue can it? Something a
hotfix worth of man hours couldnt fix???

Thanks

ss-

You're quite right. You can't do anything to merge them because they are
different file formats (as you know) is what people from MSFT have told me.
But...

(I can't tell you the time line) I noticed the last few months (and I didn't
do anything to make this happen) that messages I mail to Win Mail's in box
show up in OE's box on XP now. But that wasn't the case for a long
time--though the Betas and my memory is hazy on this so I don't know if
something in RTM Vista changed this.
As to Outlook, you can merge them easily if the accounts are on different
OS's.

On a dual boot machine, I rarely (and I mean for months) don't boot up to XP
because I can access the XP files and desktop from Vista so I have no real
need to. That's why I can't give you a firm time line. The last couple
times I have though, I noticed my Win mail inbox entries in OE--that hadn't
been happening.

I'll try to find out what could have changed this. One of the OE/Win Mail
experts that hang on that group would be more likely to keep up with
anything happening in them.

There are workarounds that are well known. Bit Locker--if Bit Locker is in
your Vista edition is one way to protect the Vista restore points. I have
seen some others mentioned on this group and the setup group if you search
for them.

I know John Barnett has in the past advocated using Tweak UI as an
alternative to Bit Locker encryption, but several sites have posted that
doesn't work.

MSFT has also confirmed that Tweak UI won't do it.

John's article is here:
http://vistasupport.mvps.org/prevent...windows_xp.htm

Bert Kinney's article and methods with 3rd party is here:
http://bertk.mvps.org/html/dualboot.html

Some people have used Acronis 10 or Boot Magic to hide the Vista restore
points.

Others have done this:

Start->run->gpedit.msc-->user configuration > Administrative Templates >
windows components > windows explorer > hide these specified drives in My
Computer

or

Note also that in that section of gpedit.msc there's a "Prevent access to
drives from My Computer," which looks like an even stronger option compared
to "hide these specified drives in My Computer

or

perhaps assigning a drive letter to your Vista partition might work when you
want to boot to XP. Administrative tools -> Computer Management -> Disk
Management, and remove drive letter assignment for the Vista partition?

I might add if you have the DVD you can use System Restore from Win RE's
Recovery link--and it's important to emphasize that you have System restore
accessable from F8 (when you have the points all 4 safe modes and one might
work when another doesn't--I see this all the time--and also from the Vista
DVD.

Of course in all cases you have to have the restore point or points to begin
with.
